The winery's name, Ca' Marcanda, means "House of Hopeless Negotiations" in the Piedmont dialect. The owner, Angelo Gaja, tried to negotiate with the owner of the land many times to acquire it, but was defeated every time. After 18 rounds of negotiations, he finally received his long-desired land. During the negotiations, Angelo Gaja's wife was often surprised and asked him, "Are you going to Ca' Marcanda (hopeless negotiations) again?", so he named the winery "Ca' Marcanda".
Gaja has firmly established itself as the king of Italian wine, holding a top-class position. It has received the highest rating (Tre Bicchieri) more than any other winery in the wine magazine Gambero Rosso.
