Opus style created by time, place, and people
"TIME & PLACE" is an important concept that we have set forth to create the work Opus One. TIME shows that the concentration and complexity at the heart of great wine comes from the grapes' ripening process, which varies from year to year, giving rise to the individuality of each vintage. PLACE is the terroir of Oakville, including its geology and climate. At the winery, we make wine so that you can feel a sense of unity between them.
What connects these two elements of "TIME & PLACE" is "people." From cultivation to winemaking, it is through the interaction of various people involved in winemaking, such as growers and winemakers, that the wine that is said to be the best is born.
Opus One's vineyards consist of four vineyards in the western Oakville AVA, including the renowned Tocalon Vineyard. In the vineyard, we use traditional approaches, including hand-picking. When modern technology is more effective in winemaking, we always incorporate new methods based on research, evaluation, and judgment.
The current brewmaster is Michael Schirachi, who has been involved with Opus One since 2001. When he was assigned Opus One, he thoroughly analyzed its style. While inheriting the style of Opus One, we continue to refine the sophistication of our wines by working on night harvesting and natural cultivation methods based on scientific verification.
Additionally, in 2021, we established our 2030 Vision, which clarifies the actions and activities that are most important to our employees, local communities, and the planet, and are implementing a variety of sustainable initiatives from our vineyards to our winery. In 2022, we became the first company in Napa Valley to receive both "Napa Green Vineyard" and "Napa Green Winery" certifications.
